Lightning Boxes was created to simplify the process of making enclosures for electronics projects. Typically, an electronics hobbyist has two options for protecting their project:
- Select an off-the-shelf enclosure that is approximately the right size, then manually add cutouts for external components. This is reasonably quick, but the result may be lacking in both form and function.
- Design a custom enclosure from scratch, using their favorite materials and techniques. This method is rewarding, and can produce amazing results. However, it often requires more time and effort than the circuitry itself. It can also be impractical for new makers who lack the proper tools.
Lightning Boxes provides a third option. Users can design a custom enclosure in minutes using an intuitive 3D interface. They can directly purchase that design, or, if they have access to a 3D printer, download a model of the design for free and print it themselves. This allows anyone to create an attractive, functional enclosure that is purpose-built for their project.
